Jesica Yap is a composer for visual media based in Los Angeles, California. A film-scoring graduate from Berklee College of Music, she has an extensive background in arrangement, conducting, orchestrating, sequencing and live performance. Inspired by everything from her immediate surroundings to the visceral stimulation she gets from being around others, Jesica’s influences range from classical to Jazz and anything in between, citing inspiration from Chopin, Stravinsky, Arvo Pärt, Bernard Hermann, Michel Camilo and Björk to name a few.
Since her move from Boston in 2014, she has had the opportunity to work with some directors, music editors, sound designers, A-list composers and studios, completed an internship at Hans Zimmer’s Remote Control Productions (Kungfu Panda 3, Batman v Superman), and worked closely with Henry Jackman at Sacred Tiger Music (Captain Phillips, Big Hero 6, Captain America) while freelancing on the side.
Some of the films she has been involved with were nominated for awards at a variety of film festivals, including LA Shorts Film Festival, XXI Short Film Festival, Los Angeles Indonesian Film Festival, Europe One Screen Festival, and Vidsee Juree 2016. Some of her works have been screened at the Laemmle Royal,
Regal Theater, Regent Theater, XXI Epicentrum Jakarta, JW Marriott Hotel Medan. Jesica’s works have been performed by several orchestras including The Kalistos Chamber Orchestra, The Esterházy String Quartet, and Triple Helix. She also composed and conducted the Silent Film “Safety Last!” at The Coolidge Corner Theater, The Cutler Majestic Theater, Dreamland Film and Performing Arts Center and The Martha's Vineyard Film Center. She was awarded with Asian World Tour Scholarship for her college years at Berklee and her original score to picture was recognized at the Final Year Academy Rewards.
Jesica is passionate about music in all its forms, and has a deep interest in the technical end of production as well. To highlight her skills in MIDI sequencing, sound design and engineering, Jesica performs live on piano and synthesizer for Eleri (IAMX, Dev) as well as being a freelance keyboardist and pianist, occasionally appearing as a side musician for bands at L.A. and Hollywood area clubs such as the King King, House of Blues, Lucky Strike, The Victorian in Santa Monica and The Canyon Club in Aguora Hills. Recently, she has found great satisfaction in teaching piano, sampling the sounds of her environment, and restoring an old piano.
Jesica is always on the hunt for new and exciting musical challenges. She welcomes the opportunity to collaborate with other artists, songwriters, producers and filmmakers, and would relish the opportunity to work for a film studio, large or small. She takes great pride in her professionalism and strong work ethic, and is known for her playful and cheerful manner and the innate passion she feels for anything related to music or art. To condense it all down to one central thought, she is doing what she loves and she loves what she does, and if that is indeed the meaning of life, she has truly found the answer.
